About Our Company

Our History

In 1959, James Doherty established Doherty Ornamental Iron, Inc. as a fabricator of porch and balcony railings.  In the early 1970’s, several of his customers requested he supply and install structural steel for upcoming projects.  By the end of the decade, structural steel fabrication and erection had become the majority of Doherty’s business.  In order to reflect this shift, Doherty Ornamental Iron, Inc. changed its name to Doherty Steel, Inc. in 2006 as a part of a new branding strategy.

    Doherty Steel Today

Today, the company is still locally owned and operated by the Doherty Family.  In 2021 and 2022, to meet market demand and the needs of larger projects, our facility underwent two phases of expansions.  In 2021, Doherty Steel added a 16,000 sq. ft. expansion for fabricating, painting, and shipping.  In 2022, a second 16,000 sq. ft. addition opened for structural fabrication, growing our facility by a total of 32,000 sq. ft.  These expansions have doubled our processing capacity from 12,000 tons to a potential of 20,000+ tons yearly and increased the material size capabilities to run 44” wide material up to 850 lbs/foot.

      Automation is Key to Success

The Phase II expansion in 2022 has launched Doherty Steel into a new tier of steel capabilities. Growing our processing line from one to two lines doubled output capacity and increased efficiency for faster processing and transitions into fabrication. We also made the investment to upgrade to all new fabrication equipment; today we possess one of the largest Peddinghaus machinery installations in the world.

        Material Handling Capabilities

Material is moved around our 165,000 sq. ft. facility with the assistance of multiple conveyors, cross-over conveyors and overhead
cranes. Doherty Steel has a shop lifting capacity of 50 tons, 5 yard fork lifts, and a COMBiLiFT Straddle carry with a 77,000 lb. lifting capacity. An average of 40 to 60 workers makes up the shop workforce.
